Serving those who serve the world

The vision of our church is to serve those who serve the world.

We are a close-knit community rooted in East Harlem, serving people from the greater NYC area and beyond, and representing many different stories. Our community includes creatives, artists, educators, social workers, therapists, administrators, non-profit leaders, for-profit business leaders, lawyers, doctors, nurses, parents, children, youth, community members, volunteers — all being woven together in Christ as we share in the rhythms of God’s grace together.

Communion is central to our worship experience, and we invite all Christians to participate in the weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper together.

We believe in the Integrity of each individual before God and allow for diversity of conviction and opinion. Every Christian should study Scripture and listen for the Holy Spirit themselves, since we will each give an accounting for ourselves.

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and is best understood when studied within a community of faith. Diversity offers a rich context to fully appreciate and learn from scripture.

Finally, we believe in the Unity of all Christians, and seek to foster greater understanding and cooperation. We believe the Body of Christ is one. Therefore, we seek to bring people together, rather than divide, based upon differences.

What We Believe

As newly welcomed congregation into the  Disciples of Christ, we put our trust in God and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior through our Confession that He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

We practice believers' Baptism by immersion, while recognizing and accepting the validity of other forms.

Why Metro

Vulnerability & Authenticity: Community is about participating in "meaningful risk." This posture is what gives us the ability to know others, while being known. This is one of the ways we grow in Christ.

Located at the Intersections: Our church location is at the seam between East and Central Harlem - a few blocks northeast of the barrio. It is at this intersection where God has uniquely called us to abide, to be about reconciliation and working against the things that separate us. We're not just diverse and anonymous people on a subway car. We're a snapshot of what heaven will look like.

Participation with Christ & others: Whether it's a bible study group, a potluck, prayer walk or supporting local indigenous small businesses, we are frequently invited into a living, acting gospel. One formative we hold on to is "what are we contributing to while we are here?" Every person - single, married, old and young - that comes through Metro's doors brings a unique gift.  In other words, you are welcome here!
